Course Description:

Come learn the basics of copyright law with Colorado arts attorney, Caroline Kert. Learn how to identify when someone may be infringing your rights, or when you’re infringing theirs. We’ll also examine fair use concepts and popular misconceptions about intellectual property. Caroline has her own law firm, art.biz.life Legal Counsel, and is an active volunteer with Colorado Attorneys for the Arts (CAFTA).    

Please bring the following supplies with you: 

Art Supplies: note taking materials like a pen and paper or laptop. 

Bio:

Caroline R. Kert is an attorney and a mediator. She champions artists and helps businesses protect their revenue streams, so they can focus on what they do best. She helps clients cut through the overwhelm to develop priorities and strategies that work for their specific business needs. She counsels businesses, nonprofits, and creatives on all aspects of their business practices including entity formation, contracts and negotiation, mediation, employment and independent consultant contract negotiation, employment law, intellectual property registration and licenses, risk management, collections, conflict resolution, and litigation. She has represented or served as a Board member for numerous local arts organizations and has recently been appointed as a Boulder City Arts Commissioner. She serves as a Director for Art in Community, Inc., Temple of Tranquility, Inc., and the Denver Regional Fund. She has served as a Director of the Boulder Fringe Festival, the Boulder Chamber Orchestra, and as a Director and President of Apogaea, Inc., a local 501(c)(3) arts organization associated with Burning Man, and she was a founding member of The Phoenix Asylum, a Boulder arts collective. She was appointed as Burning Man's regional contact for Boulder in 2016 and was named the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts' inaugural Volunteer Attorney of the Year in 2018


Colorado Attorneys for the Arts (CAFTA) is a program of Colorado Business Committee for the Arts (CBCA). CAFTA is a statewide legal referral service that connects artists and creatives entities of all disciplines with access to legal services, in addition to arts-related legal education.
